"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." - Groucho Marx (1895-1977)

Remember the original default wallpaper for Windows XP ?

Well, it was a photograph of a real landscape in Sonoma County, California, taken by photographer Charles O’Rear.
Here's the xp wallpaper...

And here is the same place photographed at different times...

Teachers didn't behave like this in my day...

A group of teachers from Bloomingdale High School, in Florida gathered to poke a bit of fun at some bad habits exhibited by high school students.

Continuous Shot Music Video

one camera - one take.

This is the very impressive, shot in one take with one camera, music video for Tim Halperin's song "She Runs"

DVDStyler

Sometimes it can be hasstle making a DVD, especially if you are trying to make one from different sources or file formats...well, DVDStyler couldnt make it much simpler...it can take all the major video formats { including AVI, MOV, MP4, MPEG, OGG, and WMV, and codecs like MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, Xvid, MP2, MP3, and AC-3 } and make a DVD disc {drag and drop} and without any hasstle...
It also makes grabbing you favourite collection of youtube videos {download them from keepvid.com as mp4 files} and make a DVD for tv playback easily.

Microsoft Office Live - Free Web Version of Microsoft Office

This is a free version of Microsoft Office {Web-based versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote}, it can only be used through your web browser and is stripped down compared to the desktop suite, but it's free.
Word documents are saved in docx format only, not a choice of doc and docx {docx being the newer version of saved word files}
...again, it's free...and for casual users may be the very thing to suit them.....you also get a whopping 25gb of online folder space for your files....meaning you can access your 'office' and 'office files' on any computer, anywhere, at any time..

"A collection of cliches and stock characters..."

This was a memo, from May of 1974, sent by 'Comedy Script Editor' Ian Main to BBC Television's Head of Comedy and Light Entertainment.

Pale Moon Browser

This is a Firefox-based web browser, but what the makers have done is to strip away anything they can from Firefox which may have an effect on performance, such as - automatic updates to the browser, crash reporting, accessibility features...but the support for Firefox add-on's remain.

'Pale Moon' claims to be up to 25% quicker and lighter than Firefox and is especially suitable to lower-powered computers or slower internet connections.

The Silent Treatment

A short film starring Marc Warren, probably best known for BBC's 'Hustle'...

"Hung-over and confused the morning after, a man questions his girlfriend about what happened at the party the night before. But when she doesn't reply — and he tries to guess — he says too much."

I like a lot of these type of short films, although a lot of them, like this one, are basically just scenes that look like they have been lifted from a full length film...

The future of car parking..

Next time I bring the Merc to Budapest I'm going here to park it...

Woman in Texas has now won the lottery four times !!

The odds that this lady would hit four lottery jackpots for a combined $21 million are as slim as 1 in 18 septillion — that's 18 and 24 zeros....I didn't even know there was such a number as a 'septillion'..

The Beatles - Telephone

I could say something like "They have found a new Beatles recording"...but i'll just say that this is brilliant and extremely well edited...

U2 - "We're Coming Back!!"

A comeback for U2 it seems, and don't they all look happy and more importantly healthy, especially the man who has been laid up with a bad back - Bono....and he's looking very trim, lost some weight with his mishap it seems, but in good physical condition and thats the main thing.
The summer 2010 European Tour opens in Turin next month, albeit late, but without an Irish / UK date.
It's amazing to see a band as long together as they are remain as the line-up that started out and all seem to get along so well still, it's quite unique and obviously great for U2 fans.

The 2010/2011 Tour dates are *here*

An Interview With A Human Robot..

Now, this may look a bit crude and maybe not all that impressive, but this is the start of proper human robots....imagine where the technology that developed this will be in, say, 30 years ??.....
Will this end up causing a huge rise in global unemployment??....will there be robot waiters, taxi drivers, shop assistants, etc ??

Amazing Photograph from the Albert Kahn WW1 Collection...

This is an amazing photo from Albert Kahn's WW1 photographic archive {Albert Kahn info *here*}....I couldn't find a photo online of it...but here's a little youtube I uploaded from a video I have...

Introducing the "Exhaust Burger"...

Can't think why no-one has thought of this before....this was an entry into a design competition titled "Dining In 2015" by an Iranian team a couple of years ago.....they didn't win though...

25 Years Ago Today...

2 billion viewers, across 60 countries, watched this....'The Global Jukebox' - the concert for starving people in Ethiopia, and surrounding regions which raised £150 million sterling.
It was the day that the world came together in the spirit of music and charity..

Holland win the World Cup...

...well...for a couple of minutes...kinda...

For a short amount of time, a very short amount of time, people who read the CBS News website were under the illusion that The Netherlands had beaten Spain for the World Cup title.

A pre-written article congratulating The Netherlands for winning “by a score of SCORE to SCORE” was published on CBS’s 2010 World Cup site accidentally, where it remained online long enough for the above screenshot to be captured.

Apparently this kind of thing happens a lot where news sites have an article pre-written in the moments leading up to the end of such an event so they can publish it online quickly.

The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest

I was reading 'Empire' magazine over the weekend and there is a piece about a new documentary film based on the 1924 Mount Everest summit attempt of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine....the film goes on release on 6th August.

It has always been a great source of debate whether the duo made it to the top or not...their bodies were found 800 feet from the summit, but were they going up or on their way back down ??.....it was aparent that mallory had fallen from a much higher ridge...but he had his goggles in his pocket which would suggest that he wasnt facing the sun, which would in turn suggest he was coming back from the summit, or as near as they got to it..or would it??...it's an 86 year old mystery at this stage...

..don't like the way Liam Neeson {who narrates the new film} says in the trailer - "George Mallory and his fellow climber"....why not say "George Mallory and Andrew Irvine"??

so...you're going to rob a bank and need a good mask..

..well, this could be the very thing...

A Day in Sligo Airport...

..as told by Ian Coppinger...

Kidzui - safe and fun internet for kids..

This is something i tell a lot of people with young kids about...a fantastic little piece of software, our youngest child uses it and loves it..
Basically it is a browser, but the content is designed for young children...i would say under 8's...i imagine 3-4 year old's will especially like it.
..it has ton's of flash games, childrens websites, and specially chosen youtube videos...

The browser can be 'locked' so you can walk away knowing the child can't minimize the browser and go messing with other files on the pc.
..if you have a child between 2-8 i'd highly recommend this...like i say, we have had it on our house pc for a good while now..
..there may be a short registration process, but this only has to be done once...
